What is MOVE?

Needs-Focused Leadership

in Project Management

MOVE is a leadership framework designed to integrate emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, and motivation into project environments in a structured, practical way.

It is built on the understanding that projects are inherently human endeavors – success depends not only on execution, but on how people’s needs, trust, and collaboration are managed throughout the process. These are things that are important to you. If they are fulfilled, you will be fine. But beware: they are also sensitive buttons. They are pressed more often.

MOVE stands for:

  • Mediation – addressing and resolving conflicts constructively, grounded in needs-focused communication.

  • Motivation – fostering sustained engagement by recognising and supporting individual and team needs.

  • Movement – maintaining momentum through adaptive strategies and trust-based leadership.

The MOVE framework is structured into three interconnected models:

The respective needs profile can be used in different ways. If you are working with another person, e.g. someone you are managing or coaching, they can create a profile and reflect on it with you. It is also possible to create your own profile and use it to further develop your own personality.

How MOVE Can Be Applied

MOVE can be applied both in individual projects – from kick-off to closure – and at the organizational level to strengthen leadership culture, HR processes, and governance structures. It is designed for flexibility: you can use the complete framework or integrate specific elements into your existing methods.
